The spring meeting of the
Tennessee Association of Blood Banks (TABB) was held in Memphis. The
meeting opened on Thursday, May 7, 2009 and adjourned late Saturday
morning, May 9th. The attendance was somewhat lower than usual. There were
13 speakers and many exhibitors.
Did you miss this program? If you did, you missed a great program. However,
you are in some luck. Most of the presenters used PowerPoint, so you can
catch up on some of this information via this website. Seeing the PowerPoint
presentations on line is not a perfect substitute for seeing and hearing
the presentation live, but much information may be gleaned by viewing

Some Program Highlights
A very timely group
of presentations
entitled "TRALI Reduction Strategies - a Panel Discussion"
were given Thursday afternoon beginning with a PowerPoint
presentation by Joe Schifano, MT(ASCP)SBB, CEO West Tennessee
Blood Center, Jackson. He was followed by Deirdre Cullen, MT,
CLS, Donor Room Manager, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital,
and Richard Jones, PhD, Vice President, Technical Services,
Lifeblood/Mid-South

The Friday program featured
Debra L. Callahan, M.D.,
Associate Medical Medical Director, Vanderbilt University Medical
Center, spoke about "Improving Transfusion Medicine Practices at
an Academic Medical Center: Development of a Hospital-Wide,
Systematic Educational Program"
Shawn D. Keil, BA,
Laboratory Scientist, Lab Lead, CaridianBCT Biotechnologies told the
audience about his work with "Pathogen Reduction: Enhancing Blood
Safety Using Riboflavin and UV Light."
Anita Curcio-Brint, MBA, MT(ASCP)
spoke on her topic "Introduction to Microarray Testing with

Dr. Brian Sorrentino is
the Director of the Division of Experimental Hematology, St. Jude
Children's Research Hospital. His exciting topic was "Hematopoietic
Stem Cell Therapy for Blood Disorders." See his PowerPoint

more meaningful if you were at the meeting and heard Dr. Sorrentino
deliver his presentation.
The title of the presentation given by Eleanor Jator, PhD, MT(ASCP) was
"Recruiting Students to the Medical Technology Field." Dr. Jator
is an Assistant Professor at Austin Peay State University.
