- Statute was amended in late 2004 to allow Medical Laboratory Board to
promulgate rules for continuing education.
- Original rules were filed in August 2005.
- Became effective October 2005

- Defined as planned, organized learning acts acquired during licensure to
maintain, improve or expand a licensees knowledge and skills in order to
improve the safety and welfare of patients in Tennessee

- Medical Lab Professionals are required to fulfill 24 hours of Board
approved CE’s during the 2 calendar year cycle previous to renewal of
individual’s license.

- CE’s also pertain to those with retired licenses who wish to reinstate
and licenses revoked due to expiration.

- Renewals are based on a two (2) year cycle. Every CE cycle will run from January 1
to December 31 of the following year.
- EX. Jan. 1, 2006 - December 31, 2007 (even year) Jan. 1, 2007 - Dec. 31,
2009 (odd year)

- The TN Medical Laboratory Board will accept courses sponsored or
approved by 31 organizations
- Accredited colleges and universities
- Hospitals licensed by Dept of Health

- Labs, blood donor centers, plasmapheresis centers, ATSC’s, collection
stations provided the CE has been approved by the medical laboratory
director or his/her designee

- Audit letters will be sent at random
- Proof of CE cannot be in the form of a personal summary
- Copy of certificate showing topic, hours awarded and agency that
approved must be submitted in response to audit

- Responsibility of licensee to ensure CE’s meet state requirements
- CE’s need to be relevant to the area in which you practice
|

- Ask yourself: Will the material
contribute to my professional growth and development as a MT or MLT?
- Taking on-line CE courses unrelated to our area of practice is not
likely to help you with professional development
